I booked in for the 3 hour makeup lesson with Mel which I had yesterday. Having recently turned 60, I have felt for some time that my old make up routine was just not cutting it any more. Because of skin issues, I have always had a difficult relationship with makeup and have never felt very skilled or confident at doing it. but since my skin has aged and changed, I find I am much more tolerant of products but felt my usual makeup routine no longer worked for my changing skin and face.. Mel was clearly very experienced and exactly what I needed. I was pretty nervous as I didn't know what to expect but she was so lovely and welcoming and I instantly felt at ease. As asked, I went wearing my usual makeup and took with me my own rather embarrassing make up collection, obtained over many years. Mel was happy with a few of the bits that I owned but persuaded me to part with most of the old and wrong for me stuff. The lesson covered everything from skin care to coverage, correction and age appropriate make up. She did half of my face and I copied on the other side. I was really happy with the result and received compliments from my family on my return. Mel made recommendations for lots of different products that she uses and likes from all sorts of places and is clearly not affiliated to any makeup company. Not everything is the cheapest but shopping around on the internet, I found a lot of the items at a discount. Both the lesson and the purchasing of products has come at a cost, but this is not something I will do again for some time and I feel that as long as I am able to put into practice everything that I learnt and continue to recreate what I was taught yesterday, I consider it to be money extremely well spent.Posted on Google
Louise Cook9 days agoI can highly recommend Mel and her makeup lesson! I really needed a refresh and some hints and tips to help me look more alive and polished and she was fab! She looked through my makeup bag and assessed the products and brushes (some were worth keeping, others were ready for the bin!). She talked me through a good skin prep routine then she applied one half of my makeup whilst I tried to recreate the look on the other half. She made us feel really relaxed and we both enjoyed it and left feeling much more confident with our makeup. She did a brilliant job of tailoring it to us (including making the session shorter than standard to allow for a health condition). So calm and considerate of my concerns such as a blemish that needed concealing to being an older bride with some wrinkles to soften. I will be using her again for any special occasions I have. She also did amazing with my mum, flower girl and sister. My false eyelashes and make up lasted all day even through eating and dancing and I got lots of compliments. The trail was very reassuring and I felt relaxed and comfortable and then left feeling beautiful! on the morning of my wedding she also did my mums make up, who is an older woman and was also worried with how it would look, we were so so happy with everything and would definitely book again should the need ever arise! Gayle Butterworth140 days agoI booked a mum daughter makeup lesson for my daughter’s birthday (14 year old). I wanted my daughter to learn about colours to match skin tone and general techniques. I wanted to understand modern makeup techniques as I’ve had no time for myself to really invest in to doing this myself. The whole experience far surpassed my expectations. Mel was fantastic from start to finish and made us feel at ease. We learned about all steps of the makeup application process, taking away excellent tips and knowledge, specifically on brush types to use and where to apply certain types of makeup along with what is better/worse for older/younger skin. Mel followed up the lesson with a product board by email showing the products used/recommended which was really helpful. We both felt amazing with how the makeup looked and as we practiced doing half of it, it’s something we can easily take away and recreate at home. L C212 days agoMel is a complete star! When I contacted Mel I had no idea what I should ask for. I just knew I’d like my make up to be professionally applied for a wedding I was attending. Not being local to the area, I found Mel online and looked at the photos of her work and didn’t see anything I didn’t like! Mel’s communication was fast and I found her really helpful. She asked questions that helped her advise me on what I may like (I rarely wear much make up!). Mel was kind enough to come to our hotel and set up quickly. I’d only had my make up applied professionally once before and Mel was so kind and patient guiding me. The amount of kit was like a mobile beauty counter. All brushes were clean and I had no concerns about hygiene and could tell Mel takes great pride in her craft and resources. The final result was AMAZING! I looked like a healthy, glowing version of myself! Mel applied false lashes and whilst they felt different at first, after a few minutes I forgot they were on. I won’t share pictures, but trust me when I say my skin was glowing and my eyes make up was spectacular. Mel applied lipstick and advised me which of my own would work best too (she was also happy to use my own but I preferred hers!). After 12 hours of eating, dancing, partying my make up still looked fresh. I didn’t do any touch ups (not capable!) so was thrilled it lasted so long- was sad to take it off. One guest thought I was the same age as her- so thanks Mel for knocking 15 years off me! If you are looking for a make up artist, book Mel. Not only do you get an amazing face, but you get a really lovely person who makes you feel comfortable at every step. I learnt so much from how to apply make up, where to apply the make up so it added uplift to my face and how to totally enhance my features. Melanie explained what and why she was doing as she applied make up on one side of my face in small areas at a time so I could follow on the other half of my face. Melanie is so professional, knowledgeable and friendly always considering my needs and ensuring I felt comfortable and understood techniques. Additionally she helped me make notes as I wouldn’t have remembered everything and created a product board with product recommendations for my online perusal afterwards. No pressure at all. I came away full of confidence and actually smiled at myself in mirrors instead of grimacing. We concentrated on a daytime look but Melanie also showed me how to create an evening look. I felt she took time to understand what I wanted to get from the lesson, and made sure everything was covered. I also appreciated that she suggested a range of products for all price ranges, and told me where I could purchase them which made it really easy to re stock my make up bag! It was a really fun experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone, either for a gift or a personal pamper treat. One thing - I went for the one and a half hour lesson and wished I had booked longer as there was so much to learn, but it's a good excuse to go back with a friend for a 'party look' before Christmas. Jean310 days agoLadies, scrap the money you're spending on hair and nails! Quite frankly, you'd be a fool not to treat yourselves to this. At 55, I needed a complete upgrade / overhaul on my make up! I wanted to know how to deal with my ageing skin which has totally changed in tone and texture. And there are SO many products out there...it's wildly confusing. However, we ladies understand that as our skin changes, so too must our skin regime. Unfortunately mine has stood still since turning 40! Mel truly was the right person for this. She put me instantly at ease. She took the time to listen. She gave suggestions and considered explanations in a gentle and kind manner. She proposed products in all price ranges. Anna Clark494 days agoMel was an absolute gem! She took so much time in my makeup trial to make sure I was happy with my bridal look and happily changed bits as we went along. On the morning of my wedding, Mel arrived on time and was ready to get going with the bridesmaids makeup. She listened to them and made a couple of changes as she went based on what they had asked for, nothing was to much trouble. For my mum, Mel made her feel so comflortable, as someone who doesn't wear makeup regularly, Mel made her feel so made up, but still like herself. My makeup was natural, but felt very bridal and lasted from 10am to well after midnight! Mel also recommended the Lipstick colours and tinted moisturiser I should buy, so I could keep my look topped up a day. She taught me so much about products, colours and the looks I wanted to aim for. She helped me understand which products of mine were working for me and why, and made suggestions for new ones. I honestly learnt so much from this lovely lady. I booked a 1.5 hour lesson thinking 'how long can make up take?' - I could have easily done a 4 hour lesson. IM2999 days agoMel England was the make- up artist for my wedding at Middleton lodge, North Yorkshire. From my initial contact with her to the wedding day, Mel was brilliant at responding to my queries and listening to what I envisaged in terms of my look as a bride. She devoted time towards getting to know me, was so sincere and empathetic and was excited about the theme of the wedding that attempted to adopt the traditions of two cultures. On the day of the wedding, Mel was at the bridal suite as promised, on time. She had notes from the trial for reference and was calm and composed in carrying out her work: this was a true reflection of her experience and expertise in the field! My flower girls loved their make-up and couldn’t stop smiling the whole day!
