From the archive: makeup trends in 2016. This article looks back at the brows, bronzer, lips and eye looks I wrote about in January 2016. It’s a snapshot of that year, rather than a guide to today’s trends.

1. Big brows
Full, defined brows were a key part of the 2016 look. I loved the emphasis on brows, but the most flattering shape and amount of definition always depend on the individual face.
2. Modern mermaid
This was the name given to luminous, light-catching skin. Highlighting was very much in the spotlight—also explored in my article about strobing.
3. Sun stripping
Bronzer swept across the cheeks and bridge of the nose created a sun-kissed strip of colour. It was a bolder alternative to placing bronzer just around the edges of the face.
4. Nude and cherry lips
Two very different lip looks: a soft nude or a clear cherry red. Both offered a way to change the whole feel of your makeup.
5. Blue eye makeup
Blue returned as a statement eye colour. A touch of blue liner or mascara offered a smaller way to try the look without wearing blue shadow across the whole lid.
6. Sunset eyes
Soft coral and pastel tones brought warmth to the eyes. To recreate the colour, choose an eyeshadow intended for use around the eyes.
7. 90s liner
Soft, smudged liner gave definition without the precision of a sharp liquid wing. A pencil close to the lashes, gently blended, captured the effect.
8. The colour-block eye
A more graphic approach: blocks of eyeshadow with a defined edge, rather than a softly blended finish.
9. Statement lashes
Full lashes added drama. False lashes or a little extra mascara could make them the focus of the look.
10. Glitter
Sparkle was another memorable part of the year. If you want to try it now, choose a makeup product specifically intended for the area where you will apply it, and follow its instructions.
